The objective of the GeoWall Competiton is to design and build a model of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining wall using paper reinforcement
and a plyboard box. The design should be able to support the retained soil and design loads. Reinforced earth can be used for retaining walls, bridge
abutments, levees, and seawalls. The artificial reinforcing elements used often include steel and geosynthetics. A MSE retaining wall is a special kind
retaining structure that reinforces the earth rather than rely on an external structure to retain the backfill soil. It helps one to create a
retaining wall with least material.
An arch is a pure compression form. It can span a large area by resolving forces into compressive stresses and, in turn eliminating
tensile stresses. This is referred to as arch action. As the forces in the arch are carried to the ground, the arch will push
outward at the base, called thrust. As the rise, or height of the arch decreases, the outward thrust increases. In order to
maintain arch action and prevent the arch from collapsing, the thrust needs to be restrained, either with internal ties or external
bracing, such as abutments.

this proper, the mix design and the construction procedures must be planned and executed.
To create this material, oblique cross-sections of bamboo cane are laid between thin sheets, which in turn consist of cross-bonded
bamboo strips. From this layering, the end material gains a strong structure. The diagonally cut bamboo cross-sections are glued in

Geo-synthetic Clay Liners are artificially manufactured hydraulic barriers used for lining in canals. A thick layer of BENTONITE CLAY
is filled between two non-woven geotextile sheets. Bentonite clay has a very unique characteristic of swelling on coming in contact
with moisture. Extensive layers of GCL are manufactured in factories and transported to sites where they are laid onto the surface
of the canal to prevent seepage of water.
Geocells consist of a series of interconnected single cells which are manufactured from different types of polymers. The geocells are
expanded at the construction site and filled with soil. The cell walls completely encase the infill material and provide an all-around
confinement to the soil. During vertical loading hoop stresses within the cell walls and earth resistance in the adjacent cells are
mobilized which increases the stiffness and the loaddeformation behaviour of the soil. Besides the soil-geocell layers acts as a stiff
mat and distribute the vertical traffic loads over a much larger area of the subgrade soil. Large scale static load tests were carried
out to evaluate the influence of a geocell layer on the load-deformation behaviour of the soil. The test results show that a geocell
layer increases the bearing capacity of the infill materials up to 3 times compared to an unreinforced soil. The vertical stresses on
the soft subgrade, measured by eight earth pressure cells, where also reduced about 30 percent. To verify the results of model tests
in-situ field test where carried out within different road constructions. Earth pressure cells where installed on the subgrade to
measure the influence of the geocell layers on the stress distribution. After finishing the road construction vehicle crossing tests
with a 40-ton truck were carried out while the stresses on the subgrade where measured. Compared to an unreinforced test section the
stresses beneath the geocell layer were reduced by about 30 percent.
